Anyways, keep your fingers crossed for me:-) Due to all imaginable reasons...

sporty weekend

Last weekend was full of ... watching sport. Didn't make much effort to improve my bad shape then. So now a short report about the results of Polish sportsmen. Just in case you didn't follow them breath-taken;-)
Here they go:
- ski jumping - Malysz won the World Cup :-)
- swimming - Otylia Jedrzejczak was second at the World Championships :-)
- football - Poland - Azerbaijan 5:0 :-)
- handball Vive Kielce - Głogów 24:23 (the only event I watched personally in the sports hall in my hometown Kielce) :-)
I'm quite lucky spectator, don't you think? Very happy each time "our" player/team wins. Those who don't watch sports at all, don't go emotional about it, though quite rational, miss something definitely.
As for me, apart from the habitual once-a-week aerobics session, I don't do much. This weekend won't be different - last PEACE project parties and on Monday I have a test in evaluating derivatives... And just right now I remembered that I really should update the blog. Luckily, it was Radzio who chose the play this time, so we could eventually enjoy seeing it(I chose 2 previous ones and both were cancelled, bad luck?). Now, after the play, I couldn't be more grateful to him. It turned out to be really moving.
It was "Cinders" by Janusz Glowacki, a story about girls from reform school, who are to perform "Cinderella" fairy tale. A documentary director arrives to film it, willing to include or rather make girls personal stories the key issue of his movie, so the media here are quite blatantly accused of abusing people's dramas just to make headlines.
After the play we were quarrelling whether the main character, so-called Cinderella was pure or egoist. Makes quite a difference. If you have a chance to read or see it, do it!

update

A lot of things happening, not much writing in the last days result in the dull title and informative but not very inspiring content.

Still reading after this intro? Therefore I hope I'm at least a little bit cleverer now:-)

PEACE project started for the 6th time, which means I'm officially a grandma already:-) Grandchildren did a good job and it's so nice to see that the idea is still being passed over to next generations. The centre provides banking services to big companies. I went there because I wanted to see how the corporate banking looks like. It seemed to be a good opportunity.

I'm slightly dissapointed though. Mainly because nobody cares about my learning (and I'm skipping classes to be there). Only by making effort myself I managed to learn a little bit about the practical aspects of granting loans with different collaterals, providing bid bonds, performance bonds. However, most of the time I'm doing plenty of administrative work acting temporarily, (as I was told 3 weeks ago... but somehow it keeps being prolonged) as the director's assistant. Additionaly, around 2 or 3 times a week I'm doing industry analysis to be attached to credit applications (which means nothing more than writing some kind of a short report about the market size, trends and key success factors, the report based on the info I find in the Internet). Plus, on daily basis, I'm filling in the templates of contracts.

Ok, I've never done something like this before, so still there's some learning and I shouldn't have expected much more... It's just that.... if you squeezed all that, I would be able to learn the new things in 3 days and I'm staying there 2 months:-/ What a waste of time. One month left.

The good thing is that the bank is in the process of merging with the second big in Poland, so I'm able to see a little bit of the process from inside. The other good thing is that people are nice:-) and as somebody recently pointed it out they have good coffee there;-)

My mixed feelings probably come from the fact that in AIESEC I used to try really hard to have the best effect possible(the others did the same) and learning was there all the time. In this job it's different, therefore I know I need to check some other options before I decide on my future career path.

shoemaker phenomenon

For more than a week now, I'm wearing winter boots to work. No, it's not soooo cold in Poland yet. It's just that I lost part of the heel of my autumn shoes and I need to go to the shoemaker to have them repaired. The shoemaker's shop is open when I'm at work. That's just a minor thing but there are so many others that I'm not able to do because of the same reason. How do people working from 9 to 6 exist? Do they waste the whole of Saturday running those errands???? It sucks.

autumn weekend

I had really good time this weekend. On Saturday we had the assessment centre as part of the recruitment for new members. Big scale event: 80 people, 30 assessors, 15 facis. Well done "kids":-) I was one of the assessors. My comment: you tend to be much less strict when assessing the first group than when assessing the last one. So take the advice: whenever you have the possibility to choose between hours, the earlier you take part in the assessment, the better. Assessors wouldn't take revenage on you for being tired:-)

Today I went with Radek to Lazienki Park. It was so beautiful: yellow and red leaves on the trees, squirelles, peacocks. I enjoyed my time so much that haven't even noticed crowds of people everywhere;-) Relaxed, I had a nice talk with Bassion to end the day...So good...Why does it have to be Monday tomorrow????

PS. They were super cool. Have you noticed that last night there were only us on the dancefloor. I didn't realize it until the next day...so you really rocked :-D

I'm back to Warsaw now. As some remeber straight after coming back home I started my internship. To be honest it's a bit dissapointing - I'm repeating the same tasks most of the time, was supposed to do sthg else but still waiting for the access to all the systems - banks and their standards, procedures and superexcessive paperwork:-/It's gradually getting better though, but very slowly. At least the people are nice there and being very very very proactive I learn sthg new from time to time;-) . But anyway it's definately not as special as Beijing adventure... I work there from 9 to 5 almost every day, attending only 3 classes a week and not really feeling like the student.

I need to go for the assesors training right now... I promise to write more regularly from now on:-)

busy busy busy

Ostatnio dużo się dzieje. I manged to buy Polish bread and served it with jam, pretending that is sthg traditionally Polish (I wasn't laying that much, they don't eat jam here and we do!) I need to say that the theme of European identity didn't seem very interesting for the Chinese..

I danced polonez with polish langage studnets, they're already quite good...

AIESEC

The first evening I visited Bund, the street on the bank of river Pu with impressive colonial bulidings with nice lights on it. The other side of the river is the special economic zone, growing rapidly Pudong with the TV tower, Oriental Pearl Tower - the symbol of Sznghai.
The next day, I found myself at the People's Square and in People's Park to find finally something interesting - Modern Art Museum with the "Chinese Aesthetivs of Heterogeneity"exhibition. Some pieces on the photos ("The meeting of the little ones" and "10 women"). After, strange combination I visited the site where the first congress of the Communist party of China took place and understood the "backgound" a little bit

The old town part(which was excluded from British, French and any other influence) is really impressive though very very turists oriented. The god Qin is taking care of the city.

Hong Kong

To miasto wywiera podwójnie duże wrażenie.
Z jednej strony bardzo nowoczesne miasto. Its architecture frequently takes breath away. Every square metre is probably used in the most effective way possible. There are thin and tall buildings, roads above and underground, above and under water, spectacular sites of different companies (at the photo I'm trying to replace the chief manager of HSBC as the future statue character;-)
We came to the conclusion that an additional advantage of being promoted in HK is the high probability of having better window view. Is it attractive? Seems so to me, even though people wearing black running around there are just small cogs in the machine of international financial markets...

The other side of Hong Kong is the beautiful wildlife: sea, beaches, mountains. We went to Lantau island to visit big Buddha and pay homage to him together with other goddesses;-) (photo).

We went along the "Wisdom path" which consists of big poles standing to form a big 8 with Chinese characters curved on each. After intensive thinking (the path was no THAT MUCH helpful), we came to the conclusion that the message is: There's nothing, so don't desire anything. In this place I was eager to agree with that...

Apart from that, we went to the beach in Repulse Bay and became stars in the Avenue of stars;-)

Thank you Chan family for putting up with us for so long and for your hospitality:-)

Hong Kong nadchodze/Hong Kong here we come!

Jutro rozpoczynam razem z Regulą ze Szwajcarii eskapadę do Hong Kongu i Szanghaju. After 24-hour journey, we'll be picked up by Sarita, who prepared a detailed plan of our stay there. It seems really cool -can't wait and really thank you for that:-) On the 6th I go to Szanghai, expecting a little bit of help from LC FDU. Back to Beijing on the 8th, keep your fingers crossed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The post is going to be really short, becuase my battery will work for no more than 10 minutes and as the title suggests we've finished up our electricity quota. It is therefore necessary now to grab the card and reach appropriate insitution to buy a few more buckets of electricity;-) (no need for Internet buying cause I've recently realized that Internet is a public good as stealing it right now wirelessly from the neighbour, I'm not excluding anyone from its consumption and as far as I know, it's not a crime;-) The problem with electricity seems to be more serious because the guy who has the card is in Poland right now.
Tłumy wokół niego to prawda - deskarzy, rolkarzy i spacerujących. Kościół zamknięty na 4 spusty - w niedzielę - ciekawe zjawisko.
Wczoraj odbyła sie impreza pozegnalna Pierre'a, który wrócił do Indii. Group dancing of "Let's get it started" on the bar included. MAc, if you decide to come here, I promise at least this kind of attractions;-) Seoul is not so far...
On Sunday I hoped to visit the most popular catholic church in Beijing. There were crowds around it, true, but made of skateboarding and walking poeple. The church was closed. On Sunday. Weird.
Yesterday I said goodbye to Pierre who went back to India.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This weekend was exceptionally calm. On Friday I promoted pierogi - version upgraded (with peaches and pears) eating them in the nice company of Regula and Pierre. Sat evening we watched a movie in the empty because of IC flat of the MC (I slept there, the bed being so much more comfortable than mine - thanks:-) We manged to go swimming on Sun. The whole weekend was just chilling out - very needed at times:-)

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I visited the 1st secretary of Polish Embassy.
The embassy building is almost as impressive as the Chinese one in Warsaw, which is really surprising bearing in mind that there are just 60 Polish people living in 15mln Beijing:-/
The embassy is eager to help us with the Global Village event. They gave me the contact to the head of Polish Language department at the Foreign Languages University. Surprisingly, there are some people here learning Polish :-)! They recruit freshmen every 4 years;-) but still.
Those students have traditional Polish costumes, so I think I'm able to convince them to dance polonez or at least show up. Apart from that, they'll give us Polish authors' books translated into Chinese. I have Szymborska book, it looks really odd in Chinese:-) (Chinese translate a lot of Polish literature) They might also lend us the ambassador's cook to prepare some food:-)
Generally, it was really nice, I was able to speak Polish. The embassy lady was probably not very impressed by my eloquence though;-)

rozne cd/random thoughts on China

Hmm,

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
China is in many respects similar to Poland, current or the former one...
1. They eat dumplings and think it's traditionally Chinese dish.
2. They create subsequent 5-year plans.
3. There are banners hung at the yards with educational messages like for example "Close your windows, you'll be safer", "Clean after your pets".
4. Frequently I have the feeling that too many people are employed at the place. Even the lowest standard restaurant has a seperate waitress for almost each table. There's a driver and the person collecting money for ride in the bus, as well as people making passengers line before entering the bus at many of the bus stops.

weekend

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For supporting piracy and buying fake DVDs, I was punished with the need to watch "Da Vinci Code" in Chinese, as it was the only language version, regardless of the words on the cover. :-/
In the evening I went for the Indian night prapred by Indian trainees. We ate great Indian food with hands and watched parts of Bollywood movies. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?
On Sunday, I went to see "From Monet to Picasso" exhibition. It was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Apart from the exhibition, Beijing World Art Museum has also the "56 Chinese nationalities Hall", where such important moments as the spacecraft taking off and Mao's speech were presented on the huge relieves..

co sie dzieje w AIESEC UIBE?/what's up in AIESEC UIBE?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly, last 2 days we had the Matching Mania, trying to find appropriate students for Chinese companies and suitable traineeships all over the world for Chinese students. No results so far can be observed, mainly because of the inertia in the targeted countries ie. Japan, Korea, US and UK. AIESEC there sucks.

Fortunately, energy project is doing much better. They arranged several meetings within the first week of calling companies and have real chances of raisng an internship and sponsorship.

At the same time, as the recruitment is approaching, LC is preparing for the promotional events, one of them is going to be lasting-for-3-evenings Global Village. I'm responsible for the third, European day with special focus on Poland - thanks to numerous internships we'll be promoting Poland as the European superpower:-) I need to contact the embassy, which is currently being overloaded with work, as half of the AIESEC here is going either fo IC or You Can:-) Your suggestions on how to promote Poland in an attractive way are more than welcome.

pierwsze spotkanie/first comapny visit

------------------------------------------------

I had my first company visit today. I went with MCVP ER to see DaimlerChrysler people. The meeting didn't surprise me that much. Apart from different way of handing in business cards, haven't spotted any differences. I noticed though that my selling skills in English are much poorer, therefore I plan to practise it more:-)

Palac letni/summer palace

Kazała zbudować Yiheyuan, czyli Ogród Dobrego Zdrowia i Harmonii.

-----------------------------------------------

On Saturday we visited 2 summer palaces. First the new one, built by "entrepreneurial" empress Cixi, who governed the country on behalf of 2 consequent children heirs, killed by her each time they became adults. The summer palace consists of a big lake and a series of brigdes, tamples, buildings. There's a classic garden with lotus flowers growing form the mud of the pond. Very romantic place.
Our group comprised of 15 people was moving really slowly. Still, we managed to visit the old summer palace, destroyed by Anglo-French army.We did reproached it to the 4 UK guys travelling with us. That's probably the only place in China where you can see ruins, as traditional Chinese archiecture used wood, which either didn't remain or is restored and looks kind of fake.

rozne/random thoughts

Mamy internecik w biurze:-) Bede wiec czesciej pisac, w zwiazku z czym blog moze stac sie nieco nudny, pelen randomowych mysli.
Pierwsza mysl dotyczy aiesecowania: moja rola tutaj w 90% sprowadza sie do wyrazania opinii...Chociaz trudno w to uwierzyc, jest to męczące.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We finally have internet access in the flat. As a result of that the blog may become a little bit more boring and full of random thoughts. Apologies in advance.
Firstly, a bit about AIESEC job. Being treated as an expert can be at times really tiring -that's what I found out. Everyone expects me to express my opinion, sometimes I really feel like just doing sthg myself. Today I wrote a proposal. Feel much better now.
Secondly, I noticed I miss the fresh air. Opening the window never has the effect of nice breeze rushing in. Open air is never fresh.
And the last thing for today: looking for tiny girl? come to Beijing! The swiming costume I bought today is the XXL size. I'm a big girl!

weekend i takie tam rozne

Wielki Mur Chiński/ Great Wall

Wracając pojechaliśmy do grobowca dynastii Ming.

Odbył się też Developing Leaders Day (taki wydarzenie z ludzikami z PWC dot. pracy w grupie i przywództwa).

Stworzyliśmy grupę CEEDers United, do której należeli CEEDerzy z MC: Joey (Kanada), Lucy (UK), Regula (Szwajcaria) i z lokalnych Sarita, ja, Canice (Makau/UK), Anette (Niemcy), Siny (Korea/UK).
MC też jest raczej mało chińskie: VP ICX (UK), VP PD (Australia), VP Issue Based Experience/CSR (Kostaryka), VP ER (Turcja), VP F, VP OGX I MCP (Chiny).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We took part in the National Conference of AIESEC maniland of China. I was involved in the preapration phase, session about matching, helped with the preparation of the Developping Leaders Day. There were a lot of international people there (CEEDers, MC, even Stefano past trainee at PEACE project).
The only problem was with parties that finished at midnight and people went ot their rooms to play games with stupid punishments.

AIESEC zycie

The second CEEDer -Sarita from AIESEC UK (but oryginally from Hong Kong) came. I finally know my role here. Throughout holidays I'm going to by their LCVP ICX ( a lot of challanges ahead, as they're not legal here), I'm going to plan their pboxes and help wih matching.

Today we went to the Temple of Heaven. I still haven't got used to Chinese standards of size. Everything is sooo huge here. Walking around the temple area took us 3 hours.
I'm trying to catch a bit of Chinese, which is really complicated becuse they have 4 tones, 4 different ways of pronouncing vovels and "ma" can mean either mother or horse, which makes quite a difference....

kolejny dzien

I'm doing my CEED here, ie. I'm supposed to help Local Committe AIESEC UIBE (Univeristy of International Business and Economics) with their activities during summer time.
I live in the flat they've just rented. It' s their office at the same time. We usually eat out, as there's planty of restaurants around serving food at reasonable prices. The only problem are the chopsticks...

zwiedzanie

Dzisiaj zaczelam zwiedzanie.
